Friends who love lilies surely know about the "Gloriosa superba". It is a kind of flower that is quite different from ordinary lilies. It likes to climb as it grows, and it thrives in hot summers. Moreover, its flowering period is particularly long. The color of its petals is like that of a magician. At first, they are green, then turn beige after a few days, and then turn red. When they are about to wither, they are still red, which is full of characteristics and ornamental value.
Gloriosa superba is also called the flame lily by flower shop owners. This is because after the flowers bloom, the petals curl backward, just like a burning flame, which is extremely imposing. Therefore, it symbolizes light and enthusiasm, and its flower language is "brilliance" and "success", with particularly auspicious meanings.
So, how exactly should we take care of the Gloriosa superba that we bring home? It prefers a warm and humid environment. The most suitable temperature for its growth is between 15°C and 24°C. It likes sunlight but can also tolerate semi-shade. Although it is a summer flower, during the dog days of summer, when the sun is at its strongest, it is necessary to provide some shade appropriately. Otherwise, its leaves are easily sunburned. In winter, the lowest temperature it can withstand is 5°C. If the temperature is lower than this, the environmental temperature should be adjusted immediately, or it is likely to die.
In terms of soil, it is rather picky. It prefers fertile and loose soil. If possible, organic fertilizers or leaf mold can be used to improve the soil quality. This can increase the soil fertility and air permeability.
Regarding watering, which is what most people care about in daily maintenance, Gloriosa superba requires the soil to be kept slightly moist. Avoid overwatering and waterlogging. In relatively dry seasons, it is recommended to water once every ten days, and when watering, ensure that the water can penetrate to the roots. At the end of autumn, prevent directly watering the potting soil with frozen water, while watering with thawed water in spring can promote the healthy growth of the plant.
Fertilization is a necessary source for the blooming of flowers, so don't be lazy about it. During its growing period, liquid fertilizer or slow-release fertilizer should be applied once every two weeks, which can provide it with sufficient nutrients and make it grow healthier and stronger.
However, it is also prone to diseases and insect pests. Common pests such as aphids and red spider mites may cause trouble. So, we should pay more attention to it usually. Once we notice signs of diseases and insect pests, we should find ways to deal with them immediately to keep our plants healthy and beautiful all the time.
