How to cultivate flower spikes after Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) blooms fade

Share with
Want your blooming Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) to rebloom? By mastering the right maintenance techniques, you can not only increase the success rate of reblooming but also potentially enjoy the surprise of "mother and child plants growing together."
###花梗处理 (Peduncle Treatment)
After the flowers fade, only **green and firm peduncles** are worth cultivating—directly cut off those that are yellow or withered. The optimal pruning position is **1 cm above the 2nd or 3rd node counting up from the withered flower**, preserving the healthy part with bud nodes.
###包膜去除 (Removing the Membrane)
Bud nodes are usually wrapped in a transparent film that hinders new shoot growth.
- **For beginners**: Use sterilized pointed tweezers to gently grip the edge of the membrane and peel it off.
- **For experienced growers**: Carefully scrape off the membrane with a fingernail.
*Tip*: Avoid damaging the rice-sized bud nodes during this process.
###伤口养护 (Wound Care)
Move the plant to a cool, ventilated area away from direct sunlight and strong winds.
- Do not water or spray for 2 days.
- Apply carbendazim powder to the wound with a cotton swab to reduce infection risk.
###促芽操作 (Bud Stimulation)
After the wound heals:
- **Moistening**: Spray the bud nodes with a fine mist twice daily to keep them moist (avoid waterlogging).
- **Aspirin Solution**: Crush 1 aspirin tablet into 500 ml of water and spray once a week. The salicylic acid promotes cell division.
###温度控制 (Temperature Control)
- **For reblooming**: Maintain 18–22°C (e.g., in an unheated indoor area or by opening windows at night).
- **For new plantlets**: Keep the temperature at 22–28°C (e.g., in an air-conditioned room or near a radiator), avoiding sudden temperature changes.
###移栽时机 (Transplanting Time)
Transplant when the young orchid has **at least 2 healthy white roots over 3 cm long** and 2–3 new leaves:
1. **Sterilization**: Wipe scissors with alcohol and prepare fresh sphagnum moss or special orchid mix (sphagnum + bark).
2. **Separation**: Cut the young plant close to the base of the mother plant to minimize root damage.
3. **Potting**: Soak the new plant in carbendazim solution for 5 minutes, let it dry, then plant in the mix. Water thoroughly and place in diffused light for two weeks, keeping the medium slightly moist.
By following these steps, you may soon see new flower spikes emerging from the old peduncles or enjoy another round of blooming!
