In today's society, online shopping has gradually become the first choice for young people, whether it's clothes, shoes, or flowers. Everyone immediately turns to the internet for purchasing. However, when buying online, it’s like buying something sight unseen, and for beginners in growing orchids, this can be quite disadvantageous because they may not know how to distinguish between good and bad plants.

Generally speaking, after purchasing an orchid online, the first thing you need to do is check the leaves, flower stems for any blackening, check the roots for air pockets or rot. Once everything seems normal, you should give the orchid a "thorough cleaning." This step not only removes dust but also helps prevent unnecessary pests and diseases.

Specifically, prepare a bottle of 75% alcohol and lightly spray it on the front and back of the leaves, the flower stem, the neck of the plant, and the surface of the growing medium. Be careful not to spray the flowers or flower buds, as alcohol can burn them. After spraying, wait for one or two minutes, then wipe the leaves along the natural lines with an alcohol wipe or regular wet tissue. This process removes dust and debris from the leaves, and it also kills any insect eggs or bacteria on the surface, reducing the risk of illness later on.

After cleaning, move on to the crucial acclimatization stage, which usually takes 7-10 days. During this time, remember the "four no's": no repotting, no fertilizing, no direct sunlight, and no watering. Newly arrived orchids are quite "sensitive." Repotting can damage the roots, fertilizing can burn the roots, direct sunlight can burn the leaves, and over-watering may suffocate the roots. All of these actions can cause the plant to drop its buds or develop root rot.

For the acclimatization period, place the orchid in a location with indirect light and good ventilation, such as a corner near a window that doesn't get direct sunlight, or a spot on the balcony with a thin curtain. If the orchid has buds or is flowering, avoid strong light and drafts, as they can easily cause bud drop or flower loss. If you have other plants at home, it's best to isolate the new orchid for 7-10 days to prevent any hidden pests or diseases from spreading to your other plants. Once you’re sure the orchid is healthy, you can place it with your other plants. After the acclimatization period, when the orchid has adapted to its new environment, you can begin regular care.
