For those who enjoy growing herbs at home, many have likely grown mint, which provides a refreshing taste for the mouth. However, there is another common herb that looks very similar to mint, called Lavandula, or Lavender Mint. So, how can we quickly distinguish between them in daily cultivation?

Generally speaking, friends who are not very familiar with herbs often confuse mint with Lavandula. However, when placed side by side, they can be differentiated by their leaf appearance. Lavandula has thinner leaves that are more rounded, with a leaf length of about 3 to 7 cm and a width of 1 to 2 cm. The edges are serrated. On the other hand, mint leaves are wider and larger, with a length of about 5 to 10 cm and a width of 2 to 4 cm, also with serrated edges. Both flowers have a light purple color, but Lavandula also has white flowers, which mint does not. Mint, aside from light purple, can also have a pale red color.

Secondly, they can be differentiated by their growing environment. Lavandula prefers warm and humid conditions, with high light requirements, and cannot tolerate partial shade. Mint, on the other hand, is more adaptable and can thrive both in full sunlight and partial shade. In terms of soil, both herbs are not too demanding, but mint prefers well-drained sandy soil.

Finally, their uses also provide a distinction. Lavandula is mainly used in cooking, such as in pastries and candies. On the other hand, mint’s stems and leaves, with their distinctive fragrance, can repel mosquitoes and serve as a flavoring agent, spice, or even be used in drinks or tea. Mint is known for its cooling, invigorating, and fire-clearing effects.

In conclusion, while both Lavandula and mint belong to the herb family, they differ in appearance, growing environment, and uses. Therefore, when choosing to purchase, it’s essential to select the variety that suits your actual needs and care conditions.
