As we all know, one of the main reasons why Phalaenopsis orchids are so popular is their wide variety of species, which cater to different people’s preferences. Another reason is their positive symbolism, with meanings like good fortune, prosperity, and success.

However, in terms of care, improper conditions such as temperature, ventilation, and sunlight can easily lead to yellowing or rotting leaves. So, how should you properly handle such situations?

Generally speaking, if you water the orchid too frequently, the leaves may begin to yellow. In this case, there's no need to rush to remove all the old sphagnum moss. Instead, observe the plant for about a week, as yellowing can resolve on its own if the conditions improve. The recommended watering method is "water when dry," meaning you should touch the soil to check its moisture level before watering. After watering, make sure to check if there's any standing water in the pot, and if there is, drain it promptly.

However, if the leaves feel soft to the touch, release water, and have gray-brown spots in the center, it’s likely that the plant has developed "soft rot." If left untreated for a long time, the rotting will spread, and the leaves will turn into dry, dead tissue. In this case, simply cut off the affected leaf portions. If the disease is severe, it may be necessary to cut off the rotting parts at the root.

To prevent this troublesome fungal infection, the most crucial factor is not to place the plant in a damp, hot, and stuffy environment. Poor ventilation combined with excessive watering and exposure to direct sunlight can also lead to "soft rot." It’s recommended to move the orchid to a cooler, well-ventilated location. Also, avoid watering too quickly, and keep the soil slightly dry to prevent the roots from becoming too wet.

Additionally, you can prepare some fungicides from the flower shop specifically for orchids, such as carbendazim or thiophanate-methyl. Dilute the fungicide according to the instructions and spray it on the leaves as a preventive measure. Be sure not to spray it on the flowers, and always ensure proper ventilation. Regularly check the health of your Phalaenopsis orchid and maintain proper care.
