According to incomplete statistics, the sales of Phalaenopsis orchids at flower markets have increased by 3.2% compared to last year, proving that they are incredibly popular. However, as more people begin to grow them, more and more unusual problems have emerged, such as cracked and wrinkled leaves, withered flower buds, and blackened roots.
Recently, a plant enthusiast privately messaged me, complaining that the Phalaenopsis orchid they bought last month, with a watering rule of "water when dry," placed in a well-ventilated spot, started dropping its buds within just two weeks. This situation is really frustrating, so what’s the reason for bud drop in orchids?
In fact, every Phalaenopsis grower is eagerly awaiting its flowers, as when it blooms, its flowers are as lively as butterflies in flight. There are two main reasons why Phalaenopsis orchids drop their buds shortly after being purchased.
The first reason is low temperatures causing bud drop. In February, temperatures are still relatively cold, and if the orchid is not placed in a consistently warm indoor environment, its buds can easily turn yellow. The leaves may also lose their luster and appear wilted. This is a clear sign that low temperatures are the culprit.
Phalaenopsis orchids are native to tropical rainforests and prefer warm environments. If the temperature suddenly drops too low, the plant will drop its buds to survive. It’s recommended not to place the orchid on balconies or near drafty windows during cold weather, as cold air can easily cause this issue.
The second reason is dry air. If the plant looks healthy and the leaves are normal, but the buds are gradually turning yellow, the cause could be dry air. Phalaenopsis orchids, being native to humid environments, require a certain level of air moisture. If the indoor environment is too dry, especially when air conditioning or heating is on, the lack of moisture prevents the buds from growing properly, causing them to slowly turn yellow and fall off.
In northern winters, indoor heating dries out the air significantly, so it's important to pay attention to humidity when growing Phalaenopsis orchids. By understanding and addressing these two common issues, you can avoid many mistakes and help your Phalaenopsis orchid bloom successfully.
